According to Indian mythology, city derived its name from the name of Guru Dronacharya ,who was
the teacher of Pandavas and Kaurvas. This Place was also known as Guru- Gaon, the village of Gurus.
Place was given to Guru Dronacharya as Guru Dakshina in lieu of his teachings of marital arts to
princes. The city still has Dronacharya tank inside the city.
During the medieval Period, it was under the control of Mughals, later came under the possession
of East India Company. They declared it part of Punjab province and it was served as district
headquarters.
During the days of India’s fight for independence, the people of Gurgaon provided
tremendous support and active participation. Till independence, it remained economically backward.
Gurgaon treated as a small farming village while neighboring Delhi emerged as India's political capital.
After independence in 1947 it was still the part of Punjab until Haryana was formed new state in 1966.
Now Gurgaon is one of the largest cities of Haryana. It is the most important corporate and industrial
center of Haryana.
